The Resilient Landscapes Coalition is a community partnership that includes us here at Fire Safe Sonoma, the Habitat Corridor Project, the Sonoma Ecology Center, and the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County. We believe in this coalition that defensible space does not mean pulling out every plant and turning your garden into a “moonscape”. This would mean a bare landscape that is not only unattractive but can also invite invasive plants that are more fire prone and harder to maintain.
Based on scientific research and gardening expertise, we believe that a resilient landscape garden can use sustainable practices, plant selection, and maintenance to reduce fire risk. These practices can also save water and promote biodiversity. Fire Safe Sonoma is a proud partner in this coalition and helps pass along critical information from the group. Learn more here.
